Fostering children with disabilities

We recently spoke with James Chapman, service manager for Children with Disabilities at Rotherham Council. James has seen firsthand the incredible difference that a foster carer can make to the life of a child with a disability. We spoke with James about some of his favourite memories in his role.

The Transformational Impact of Foster Care

Fostering a child with additional needs means offering extra help to make sure the child in your care can achieve their goals. That might cover many aspirations, James tells us. Children and young people with disabilities might want to “travel on their own, cook for themselves, and advocate for their own aspirations”. James tells us that “these achievements are made possible by the unwavering support of dedicated foster carers. It’s these foster carers who believe in [the child’s] potential and work tirelessly to help them succeed”.

James shared many stories with us that highlight the incredible impact that fostering has. One example is of a young person who struggled with social interactions. Thanks to the unwavering support of his foster carers, James explained that the young person “gradually became more confident and independent.”

“His foster carers encouraged him to pursue his interests, provided opportunities for socialisation, and celebrated every small victory. Eventually, he became confident enough to travel independently, attend community events, and even enrolled in a cooking class”.

Could you foster a child with disabilities?

James explains that whilst “the role of a foster carer is challenging”, it is also “incredibly rewarding. The difference you can make in a child’s life is immeasurable. As a foster carer, you become part of a dedicated team working to provide the best possible care for children with additional needs. You help them navigate their challenges, celebrate their successes, and support them on their journey towards adulthood”.

“If you have empathy, a passion for learning and adapting, a commitment to preparing young people for adulthood, strong communication skills, and patience, we need you. Join us in making a difference in the lives of children with additional needs. Your support can help them achieve their full potential and live fulfilling, rewarding lives."
